Originally its objective is to help the population and protect it, but the sophistication of the criminals has forced them to prepare to face; That is why the Mexiquense University of Security (UMS) opened its doors in the most populous state in the country and with a constant crime rate.

In an exclusive interview with MILENIO State of Mexico, Griselda Camacho Téllez, rector of the UMS, explained the operation of these schools that are unique at the national level, since the elements are subjected to physical, intellectual and academic tests to guarantee that once they graduate they are able to guarantee the safety of the citizens of the most populated entity in the country.
Its origin dates back to 1987 when it was known as the “Police College“, But it was not until three years ago that the UMS was institutionalized as a decentralized body of the Secretariat of Security of the State of Mexico (SSEM), whose purpose is” the professionalization of public servants members of public security institutions ”.
In colloquial terms, the policemen have to go to school and it is there that they are taught the operation of technology, drones, weapons, protection and patrolling. The academic offer they have are degrees in Scientific Crime Investigation; Citizen security; and Police Intelligence, and they are not only limited to training members of the SSEM, but their instruction is extended to members of other agencies.

“Currently we trained officers in 104 of the 125 municipalities, to investigative police elements of the Prosecutor’s Office and also the Judicial Power have trusted the UMS, we have trained its second generation of the body of prefects and this allows us to constantly be posing new challenges and to give it that solidity not only theoretical but also tactical and operational that security actions require today ”.
What does it consist of?
The preparation of the applicants, he said, is also motivated by the current dynamics of society such as the gender perspective and respect for human rights. “That know the normative framework on gender in terms of human rightsWhat we want to generate is that this transcends in their attitude and above all, in their daily responsibility and that this was also to achieve an institutional transformation ”.
He explained that the programs are not only linked to the SSEM, but the demand for security makes it necessary to extend them to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) and the Secretariat for Women. Derived from this is that within the academic plans the gender perspective is encouraged and respect for human rights.
“We consider that it is not enough that today our elements are formed theoretically or that they know the normative framework on gender in terms of human rights, what we want to generate is that this transcends in their attitude and above all in their daily responsibility and that this can also achieve an institutional transformation ”.
They fight the bad image
Being a policeman is perhaps one of the professions most desired by children and the desire is not gratuitous, since for various sectors of society they are heroes and in others they embody crime itself.

Before the demand, Camacho Téllez revealed that the objective of his rectory is to train a total of 72,846 elements by the end of 2021, so that they have sufficient knowledge to meet the needs of citizens.
