Firefighters tried to build a wall to divert the course of the magma, but they have not managed to save the historic building of the town

The bell tower of the Church of the Todoque neighborhood in La Palma succumbed this Sunday to the push of the lava. Despite the efforts of firefighters to try to divert the lava from the path of the Church and other houses, it has finally reached the religious building, causing the bell tower to collapse as seen among the cloud of ash and smoke.

The new lava flow that emerges from one of the emission sources of the volcanic eruption that began last Sunday has aggressively entered the core of Todoque and has demolished, among other buildings, the church, the medical office and the association of neighbors.
Sources from the Los Llanos de Aridane City Council have confirmed to Efe that it is the second wash that runs over the first one that emerged from the volcano and that it had already caused numerous damage to this population center.
The eruption of the lava came at a time when some residents were collecting some belongings from their homes, so they had to quickly leave the area.
The president of the Cabildo de La Palma, Mariano Hernández Zapata, has indicated in the balance that he has made of the seven days of the eruption that the lava has destroyed one of the hallmarks of the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane.
The Todoque neighborhood, in which some 1,200 people lived, was one of the first affected by the volcanic eruption as a tongue of lava passed through it and destroyed a large part of the houses.
Among the buildings that had endured this first attack was the church, from whose interior the parish priest had taken all the images to put them to safety.
As explained by the president of the Cabildo, lava has once again made an aggressive appearance in the neighborhood and has taken away the “hallmarks” of the municipality.
