In October next year, the Space Crew Dragon capsule, built by SpaceX – Elon Musk’s company – and NASA, will carry out a tourist mission with film director Doug Liman and actor Tom Cruise (Reuters)
In May of this year NASA announced the first trip of an actor to space to shoot a movie. The chosen one was none other than Tom Cruise. Then the administrator of NASA, Jim Bridentsine, told that a mission would take the Hollywood star to the International Space Station (ISS, for its acronym in English), which orbits more than 400 kilometers above the Earth, to record the first space production.
Now more details of that ambitious and epic project have been released. As the account called Space Shuttle Almanac has published on Twitter, which draws up a calendar of space launches and missions for the coming months and even years, Tom Cruise will travel to space in October 2021.
His mission will be carried out by the hand of Elon Musk , since it will be his galactic travel company, Space X, who will transport him. It will go on the Space X Crew Dragon ship, which was in space in March 2019 and also, already with crew, very recently, between May and August 2020. In fact, it is not ruled out that Musk has a more active role in the film , participating in it as a producer, consultant or in a position not yet announced.
The information was confirmed by the Space Shuttle Almanac, a publication that has covered the space shuttle programs since 1992, as well as the Russian and Chinese space programs.
As shown in that calendar, Cruise, 58, will not go alone. This flight, which is classified as tourist, will also include Doug Liman, producer and director of films such as “The Bourne Affair” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith ”, who will be in charge of bringing Cruise’s space adventure to the screen in film form.
The Deadline portal detailed that Liman, who already worked with Cruise on the films “Edge of Tomorrow” (2014) and “American Made” (2017), will not only be the director of this film but has also written the first draft of the film. script and will also appear as producer.

A total of four people will participate in the mission. Cruise and Liman are expected to be joined by another member of the production, perhaps an actor or actress or perhaps a cameraman or sound operator. The ship will be commanded by Michael Lopez-Alegria , a pilot with more than three decades of experience in aviation and space, where he has already been four times. To an American mother and a Spanish father, López-Alegría was born in Madrid, grew up in California and has American nationality.
Last May Bridenstine tweeted that the project – which has no name or finished script yet – was underway: ” NASA is excited to be working with Tom Cruise on a movie aboard the Space Station!” .
” We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” added the NASA administrator from the agency’s official account.
