Valery Karpin has been appointed head coach of the Russian national football team, Izvestia TV channel reports.
The contract with the specialist is valid until December 31, 2021 with the possibility of further extension of the agreement. The next six months Karpin will combine work in the football club “Rostov” and in the national team. The RFU noted that the contract with the coach will be signed on July 26, its terms have already been agreed. The famous Soviet and Russian footballer Viktor Onopko called the appointment of Karpin as head coach of the national team a good decision of the Russian Football Union.
“He coached both Spartak and Rostov and achieved good results with Spartak. He has experience as a head coach. He knows our championship, he knows the players, all the players who play abroad, he knows the Russians. Of course, this is a good choice for the RFU, “Onopko said.
Valery Karpin himself said that now the team is faced with the task of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and every effort should be made to solve this problem.
