The last race of this first half of the season, held in Hungary, saw a challenge on the track again after many years between Fernando Alonso And Lewis Hamilton. The two champions and former teammates challenged each other for several laps, with the Mercedes driver having to work hard before being able to create an opening to enter the Asturian’s Alpine. In fact, Alonso once again gave a demonstration of his driving skills, managing to perfectly position the A521 on the track, so as to make the maneuver as difficult as possible for the old rival.
Curiously, the Hungaroring is a track that represents a lot in the careers of both (from Hamilton’s record of successes to Alonso’s first win) and also in the history of their rivalry. Right there in fact, in 2007, the dualism within McLaren exploded incurably. Interviewed by Sky Sports F1, Alonso is back to talk about that complicated and unforgettable season. He, the reigning bi-world champion, had just joined McLaren from Renault. At his side, Hamilton was the reigning GP2 champion and was preparing to shock the world with one of the best debut seasons that the Circus remembers.
The internal disagreements within the team that arose that year, according to Alonso, are however to be attributed tol team management more than the pilots. “Lewis came into F1 like a tsunami – Alonso admitted – with all his talent, his skills and immediately bringing results. It was intense and challenging for everyone. Looking back, and I think Lewis would say the same, we haven’t had any problems between us. We had a very tough but fair competition. Honestly, I think the team didn’t handle the situation. I don’t want to blame Ron (Dennis) – added the former Ferrari driver – nor anyone in particular. But as a team and management we were too young. We were too ambitious and no one guided us, in a sense”he concluded.
