The minister, who celebrates the latest announcements by López Miras to ban fertilizers, does not rule out buying farms around the lagoon to create a green belt
The
Zero Discharge Plan left by the Government of Mariano Rajoy is “outdated and oversized” and it constitutes “a pharaonic project” that does not touch on the origin of the problem of the Mar Menor. Therefore, with the exception of some actions such as the North Collector and the denitrification station, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition
he will not apply it and will design “a new strategy” to recover the salty lagoon.
This is how clear the third vice president of the Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, showed that again
state and regional administration they are in the antipodes regarding the Mar Menor.
Of course, Ribera described as an “interesting movement” the announcement of the regional government, advanced by LA VERDAD, that it is preparing a new decree to prohibit nitrogen fertilizers in the area closest to the lagoon and that it will cut the administrative deadlines for the reconversion of those illegal irrigation systems detected by the CHS, although it regrets that the measure “arrives more than a year late.”

The minister does not rule out that the State acquires land in the strip closest to the Mar Menor to create that green belt that prevents nitrate dumping. Another option is to reach
agreements with farm owners, who may have to abandon farming because of restrictions, so that they can make their properties profitable through “payment for environmental services.”
Ribera was
tough with the regional government, ensuring that «it is frustrating to see how the work we do from the CHS to detect illegal irrigation is not completed because
the chain breaks at the last link“, Which would be the return of irregular crops to their original state.
On the other hand, the Minister for the Ecological Transition was ambiguous regarding the request that the CHS close the irrigation heads to these 8,500 illegal hectares. He said that the Community has “many competences” in this regard and affirms that many of the heads are part of the structure of the irrigation communities, with whom he plans to have a meeting in the coming weeks. He also wants to dialogue with agricultural organizations, since
made it clear that agriculture as a whole ‘is not the problem »of the Mar Menor.
He also does not see clear
emptying the Campo de Cartagena aquifer, “Which is not what the experts recommend.” States that
the Zero Discharge Plan oversized this aquifer, although he admits that the water table is too high and that the Rambla del Albujón “looks like a river.”
