Alfredo Muñoz, founder of the international architecture studio Abebo, told Euronews when presenting the city project that a real city could be built on Mars as early as this century.
According to the plan developed by the study and the international team of SONet network scientists, the settlement, called Nüwa, would lie within the edge of a mountain of the Tempe Mensa geological formation, in the northern hemisphere of the Red Planet. The rocks will protect the interior of the colony from space radiation and low atmospheric pressure of Mars, while private windows in the cliff will provide indirect sunlight. Under these conditions, the city could grow to reach several hundreds of thousands of residents, the architect estimates.
Muñoz, who thinks colony building could start in 2054 and end by 2100, says.
It will be a vertical city with many rooms and floors interconnected with tunnels and elevators and will have different types of homes, offices and green spaces. Due to the scarcity of spaces, individual homes will be small.
“Space is of great value on Mars. It’s very expensive and you have to contain it. So the way we solve it is by having neighborhoods where people live in a small area. We’re basically talking about 32 square meters per person, but there are other spaces for society.” Muñoz explained.
Its creators envision Nüwa to be self-sufficient and sustainable. Electricity will be produced by solar panels installed on top of the mountain, near greenhouses. These, along with the green spaces inside the rock, will not only produce food but also oxygen for the settlers. Likewise, intensive farming techniques will make it possible to produce the necessary food for a population of only 120 square meters, an area 50 times less than that required on the land today.
The architect, who admitted that about 10% of the food depends on insects and artificial meat, said, “Most of the food we have on Mars is from crops. It is not effective to eat food based on animals.”
“We cannot make the same mistakes that we have made since industrialization, which have fundamentally harmed our planet,” concluded Muñoz.
